There are total 22 languages in India which are included in 8th schedule of Indian constitution. Part XVII of the Indian constitution deals with the official languages in Articles 343 to 351.
Currently there are six Classical languages in India: Tamil , Sanskrit , Kannada , Telugu , Malayalam , and Odia .
The Eighth Schedule to the Constitution consists of the following 22 languages: Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi,Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Bodo, Santhali, Maithili and Dogri. Sindhi language was added by the 21st Amendment Act.
Konkani, Manipuri, and Nepali were included by the 71st Amendment Act of 1992. Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, and Santhali were added by the 92nd Amendment Act of 2003 . Malayalam is also official language of Lakshadweep. Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand has their official language as Hindi. Daman and Diu also has Konkani as its official language.
Bengali is also considered as official language of Tripura. Bodo language is also used in Assam. Dogri language is also used in Jammu and Kashmir. Gujarati is also official language of Dadar and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu
